Good Friday is “Good” because Jesus Christ is God, and the Bible says that there is “no one good, no not one” except Him because “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” “Only God is good” and mankind’s heart is “deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.” Because no one can save himself or herself or “keep alive his own soul,” God’s “goodness” “leads us to repentance” of our sins and faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is good because the Gospel is the “Good News.”
God the Father sent God the Son to die on the cross for our sins to give us His grace by faith in Christ which is “according to His good pleasure.” Jesus Christ rose again from the dead on the third day according to the “good Word of God.” He is risen. He is alive. He has proved that everything He has said about Himself is true. God the Father is good, for “there has not failed one Word of His good promise” because “good is the Word of the LORD.” God’s “good Word toward you” is “Jesus Christ and Him crucified” – “hear Him.” He is the Living, Incarnate Word.
Let us be those who “receive seed on the good ground” and are “such as hear the Word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit with patience.” If you believe, God will “comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work,” and if you “have tasted the good Word of God,” then you will know “that the Lord is good.” You will believe that Christ’s death on the cross on “good Friday” proves what God declares about Himself: “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth” – Exodus 34:6. It is He who sacrificed His Son on the cross for our sins, so we could be forgiven of our sins, be granted the gift of eternal life, receive the promise of the Holy Spirit, and be conformed into the image of His Son. Why does He do this? It is because He is God “and His “Words are true,” and He “has promised this goodness” to all who will call upon Him in truth and believe that the “goodness of God endures continually.”
“Behold, therefore, the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness: otherwise you also shall be cut off” – Rom. 11:22.
Happy, Good Friday. Christ died for you and rose again form the dead. He is alive. Repent and believe the Gospel.
